SMT for You and Me: MP3 player edition

RSVP https://www.eventbrite.com/e/smt-for-you-and-me-mp3-player-edition-tickets-1989354723530

Learn to surface mount solder by assembling a pocket-sized MP3 player! Work with the teeny-weeny electronic components of the future!Surface mount components! They’re hip, they’re tiny, and you’ve probably swallowed a couple accidentally by now. If you’re still using clunky, chunky through-hole components that you found in your grandparents’ butter cookie tin it’s time to get with the times and learn how to solder the teeny-weeny components of the future! (And frankly, they're not making the old ones anymore.)This time around we'll be assembling our own pocket-sized MP3 player, based on Raphael Abrams' classic Daisy MP3 design. We'll learn solder paste stenciling, reflow soldering, hand soldering, and rework and repair techniques-- stuff you can actually use. Bring some wired headphones with you and you can walk out the door listening to jams on a player you built yourself! No prior soldering or electronics experience is required for this class. You can do it!
To bring:
Ideally, bring a microSD card (smaller capacity cards, less than 512GB, are preferred) and wired headphones, but if you don't have either we'll work something out.
Your instructor:
Adam Mayer is a longtime NYCR member who burnt his finger on a soldering iron when he was ten and has never forgiven it. He has done questionable things with PCBs and hot plates. (Don't solder with hot plates.)
There are 2 spots reserved for people who cannot access the class at the full price, so please make use of one of these $35 need-based tickets if that is your situation. Checkout Code: SMT-Access
The timing of this class is geared towards full-time parents/caregivers with kids in school, freelancers, and folks who work nights and weekends. This course will be offered again in the future at an evening or weekend time.
This is a masks optional workshop.
As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/. Please note that refunds must be requested 24 hours in advance. If you have any questions, please email classes@nycresistor.com.

Repair can be intimidating if you haven’t done it before, and the hardest part often is getting started. It’s easier with support!Repair can be intimidating if you haven’t done it before, and the hardest part often is getting started. It’s easier with support!
Get over that hump with the help of Repair Cafe NYC!
We’re a group of DIYers who love fixing things! (And we’re also on Discord!)
Repair Cafe NYC organizes events where we collectively diagnose and fix broken objects, share skills, and build intergenerational, community-based knowledge. We’re interested in helping each other gain confidence in the act of repair to prevent our belongings from going to the landfill, and thinking critically about where our things come from.
People bring a wide variety of items to events, including lamps, chairs, mugs/plates, clothes and more. Think small, portable items (no large appliances, bicycles or couches).
When: Saturday, June 6th, 2 PM - 5 PMWhere: NYC Resistor, 87 3rd Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217
At check out you will be asked these questions:
What’s broken in your life that you want to repair? Describe it and how it is broken.Does your repair require specific tools or parts? Do you have them? Are you interested in helping others with their repairs? If so, what skills would you like to share (e.g. soldering electronics, sewing fabrics, woodworking skills, understanding mechanisms)? Please be sure to fill out the RSVP form completely. This helps us to prepare for the event. If you do not fill out the form, we will assume the RSVP was by mistake and cancel the ticket.
Questions? Email us at repaircafenyc@gmail.com
This is a masks optional event.
As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.

In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others. At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, we will start with the class default and if there's extra time, a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights. Please bring the following to class:
A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.
A USB jump drive
The following items are optional if you'd like to try cutting a simple custom design. If your file ends up being too complicated, we may have you do the class default project first, just to learn the laser in the time allotted - but we'll definitely help you with your more complex cut at a free Craft Night in future!
An SVG vector file of a simple shape you'd like to cut for your first cut.A piece of 1/8 inch or thinner wood, acrylic or cardboard you'd like to cut. If you can't bring your own material, small pieces will be made available, or larger pieces for purchase on site. Please be on time for the start of class! If you're late you will miss your slot.
This class will be taught by NYC Resistor member Olivia. As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.

Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and de-soldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

OK, awesome, I want to join!
Please be ready to start at 1pm! We find that you will need this time to get through the whole class. Our classes tend to sell out about a week in advance so if you're interested, you may want to sign up early.
This class will be taught by Resistor member Olivia.
As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/. Please note that refunds must be requested 72 hours in advance. If you have any questions, please email classes@nycresistor.com.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
